Valerie Roocroft, the Junior Band
teacher is a classically trained pianist, who by the age of 19 had
won every major award in the north of England. In 1970 at the age of
28, with two small children Anthony and Mandy, she won a prestigious
international piano competition in Middlesborough. Valerie had also
successfully auditioned for solo performances with the Liverpool
Philharmonic Orchestra, but marriage and the birth of her two
children did not allow this to come to fruition. |
|
Valerie worked as a
computer programmer for British Electric, now British Aerospace, and
eventually became a teacher of mathmatics at Wellfield High School
Leyland, where she founded and ran a very fine school brass band.
She was by this time playing in the Rivington & Adlington Brass Band
along with her husband and children. |
|
On the sudden death of Mr W Haydock in
1977 Valerie was asked to conduct the Rivington & Adlington brass
band as a temporary measure. She did this for 14 years achieving
promotion from the fourth to third section. One of her first actions
in taking over in 1977 was to set up the junior band which she ran
for several years. 12 months ago Valerie came out of retirement to
take over the present junior band, many of whom she teaches at
Rivington Voluntary Aided Primary School. |
