The
Rivington and Adlington Brass Band has had a long history and was
originally founded in 1872 by two citizens known as Robert Owen and
John Miller. At the bands formation, Rivington and Adlington Brass
Band were granted a loan of £200 which went towards the purchase of
a full set of instruments. This was quickly paid off. The first
band members were residents within Rivington. The band became a
family affair with many members of the same family contributing to
the band's success, even if they didn't play an instrument. |

Many
of the band's members were also workers who came into the area when
the nearby reservoirs were being built. The first rehearsal room was
a barn, then a school room adjoining Rivington chapel and then the
village reading room.
However, a decrease in player numbers
occurred as a result of the World Wars. The band
therefore had to seek elsewhere.
The residents of Adlington compensated for the decline
of band members and, after a while, exceeded the number
of Rivington members.

Although the Adlington bandsmen
still kept their friendship with Rivington, the name of
the band changed to Rivington and Adlington Prize Band.
In 1903, the need came for the band to purchase a new
set of instruments; after all, they had been put to
continual use for over a quarter of a century! This
investment set the band back £300 so players were eager
to clear the debt and were willing to stay with the band
until the debt was paid off. This was accomplished
within two years. |

During the year of 1935, the
Rivington and Adlington Prize Band traveled to
London and entered a contest for the Crystal Palace Trophy.
The band had high expectations for their performance as the
Conductor, Joe Brooks, was an outstanding musician and great things
were expected of him. Unfortunately, during their performance, Joe
died after having collapsed. Arthur Hazlehurst, who was in the
audience at the time, rushed on stage to lead the band into the
completion of the test piece. |

This brave attempt was
unsuccessful as the shock of Joe's death had a considerable effect
upon the bands performance.
Due to this unfortunate circumstance, the band
who had previously booked accommodation within
London, left for home early.
Many local events such as walking days take
place as part of the band's agenda, the most
recent and upcoming events are detailed on the
events page. |
